Brahmapur (earlier known as Berhampur) nicknamed "The Silk City", is a city lies south of Chilika Lake the eastern coastline of Ganjam district of Odisha and about 160 kilometres south of the state capital, Bhubaneswar. It is one of the oldest and largest city of Odisha. It is famous for its silk, its temples and its culture, etc. The latest estimate of the population of the city is 355,823 (2011 census) making it the fourt most populous urban city in the Odisha state and 58th overall in India. Brahmapur (or Berhampur) also got the status of a Corporation after Bhubaneswar and Cuttack.
Station at a Glance :
All India Radio, Berhampur went on air on 1st April 1993. A day fondly remembered by every Odia, as “Utkal Divas”. AIR, Berhampur came into being as part of the three tier broadcasting policy. It aimed at highlighting the finer nuances of a particular region, its people and its culture. In 1993 the station started with modest three hour transmission per day now thirteen hours everyday.
